This week, singer Sallay Matu Garnett ("Loah") joined Jarlath for a fascinating conversation about her life from Maynooth to Sierra Leone, the West End, New York and back to Ireland once more.
Sallay speaks about her upbringing in Ireland before moving to her father's homeland of Sierra Leone in West Africa where she spent a number of years with her family. Having spent time in both Ireland and West Africa, Sallay gives a refreshing discussion on racism and Ireland's history with it.
Sallay also discusses her incredible journey through The Artist's Way in New York that unlocked a lot for her artistically while also giving her thoughts on the danger of words and judgement on incomplete art.
From a powerful discussion on how she came to truly understand the shame and guilt experienced by victims of sexual violence to the origins of Loah, how having a hyper-sensitive personality affects her life and her battle with deciding on a career in science or in music, this is a truly enlightening discussion with one of Ireland's brightest musical talents.
To hear how Sallay suffered with imposter syndrome playing Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar in the West End, the press about her which she didn't appreciate, her challenges having co-written on one of the most recognisable songs in modern pop history, how she has been meditating from a very young age and much more, become a patron of An Irishman Abroad for just the price of a pint on www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad. Tanya O'Callaghan assumed her life was going down a path towards working with animals until she discovered the bass at 17 years old. Her inspiring level of determination and devotion to music changed her life and it is the main reason she is so respected in the industry today.
Originally from Mullingar, she now works out of Los Angeles. Her gruelling schedule of touring and recording with some of the world's top acts is head spinning in its intensity. This week she joined Jarlath to reflect on her journey. Tanya explains the personality type that it takes to make it as a professional musician, the incredible work she put in to making it in America and her thoughts on toxic masculinity in the music business.

Imelda May is, without a doubt, one of the most requested guests in the series to date. This week, Jarlath and Imelda finally had the chance to sit down and chat face to face.
In fascinating detail, Imelda discusses the addictive nature of losing oneself on stage (9:00), her time working every job that she could find when she first moved over to London (14:00) and her clever marketing plan to grow her name while touring with Jools Holland (Patreon Full Length Version only).
From her incredible story about Bono's endless support for her (37:00) to her frank discussion on why artists should 'keep away from talent shows' (42:00), how you have to be totally committed to make it as an artist (30:00) and much more, this is a thoroughly heartfelt conversation with one of Ireland's true musical greats.

Friday Mar 23, 2018
Friday Mar 23, 2018
Through his work with The Stunning and The Walls, Steve Wall has become one of Ireland's most beloved singer/songwriters. For most that would be enough. For Steve it was just the beginning. Nobody can tell his story better than Steve himself.
Steve explains the 'different breed' of Christian Brother education that he had when he moved to the west (12:00), the ridiculous career guidance that he received there (17:00) and how the resulting feeling of being left behind while doing the wrong college course drove him on in his artistic pursuits (30:00).
From the hilarious stories of his time spent working as the Assistant to the Chief Lubricator in a factory (38:00) to his sexual awakening as a guitar-playing 'God' in a small German town (40:00) and the difficulties that Irish musicians face in the global industry (1:00:00), this is one of those Irishman Abroad conversations you'll wish went on for another hour with one of the nicest men you could possibly meet. The new Stunning album is out now.

Friday Mar 02, 2018
Friday Mar 02, 2018
This week, Bressie makes his hat-trick appearance on Irishman Abroad and it’s truly amazing how much has changed for Niall since then. In this incredibly honest conversation, Niall opens up about how he sometimes feels that he cannot offer people enough (14:00) and how the Irish government is only ‘box-ticking’ at the moment with services aimed at improving the emotional well-being of young people (16:00).
From revealing why The Blizzards took a break (46:00) to his views on how the support system was not in place for the winners of The Voice (54:00) and how he was thrown out of a death metal band for being “absolutely shit at shredding” (44:00), this is a fantastic conversation with one of Ireland’s most outspoken and honest mental health activists.
