This week, the winner of multiple Sports Writer of the Year awards, David Walsh, makes a welcome return to An Irishman Abroad to talk about his new book The Russian Affair.
David explains what drew him to the story of Vitaly and Yuliya Stepanov - a married couple with one a doper with Olympic dreams and the other an agent for the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (6:00). This is a scintillating story that is not to be missed.
David also addresses the Rafael Nadal doping rumours (37:00), why he believes thousands were involved in the Russian doping conspiracy and how he feels about Lance Armstrong reconstructing his own narrative which people are believing (50:00).

Susan Moran is the greatest Irish female basketball player of all time. As the only Irish woman to have ever played in the WNBA, Susan's journey from Tullamore to Philadelphia is an inspiring tale. This conversation was recorded for our Inside Basketball series but it was so good that we decided to give you a little taster of it for our Irishman Abroad listeners.
Susan tells Jarlath how she realised basketball was a particular skill of her's (10:00) and how she was scouted by Reggie Grennan which saw her getting a life-changing scholarship to St. Joseph's in Philadelphia (25:00).
In the longer-form version of this conversation (which is available tomorrow on the Irishman Abroad: Inside Basketball feed - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/an-irishman-abroad-inside-basketball/id1512016776) Susan also tells the incredible story of not getting drafted, the brutal training camp in New York which followed and why the WNBA is the best in the game.
But to hear the full, extended cut, of this interview with no ads, in which Susan discusses the art of recruiting players, her thoughts on NCAA players not being paid, The Last Dance and Ireland's relationship with basketball, become a patron of An Irishman Abroad for just the price of a pint on www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad. At a time when we are all feeling isolated and separated from the outdoors, there has never been a better time for a conversation with Dr Easkey Britton. A five-time Irish National Surfing Champion, academic, gender equality and environmental activist, Easkey’s path from Donegal to Iran and back is one you will get lost in.
The primal connection between humans and the sea is the subject of much of her work. Here she explains some of the metaphysical theories that often defy science and how Ireland has entered a new phase in its relationship with the water.
It all begins with the now legendary tale of her grandmother bringing surfing to Ireland in the 1960s from LA (13:00). Jarlath finds out about the mental preparation that is required to take on 80 foot waves (26:00) and how she went to Iran for fun and ended up introducing surfing to the women there for the first time (54:00).
Other highlights included a discussion of the surrender involved in wiping out safely (40:00), why she believes there needs to be more conversation about the risks of surfing (47:00) and gender stereotypes in the sport (50:00), even Point Break gets a mention!
To hear a discussion on Easkey's forthcoming book 'Saltwater in the Blood', her surf film essential downloads, what goes into a TED Talk, what competing taught her about her emotional connection to surfing and much more, become a patron of the Irishman Abroad Podcast Network for just the price of a pint on www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad.
