Sunday May 14, 2017
Sam Barry is one of Ireland’s finest tennis players and his journey to the top of his sport has been driven by raw hard work, self-discipline and family support. In fascinating detail, Sam explains how he has struggled with his own identity as a result of the level of anonymity in Irish tennis (5:00) and how anxiety and stress in his career once turned him to bitterness towards the game (19:00).
As a professional in a sport where even those who are not superstars are subject to online abuse from gamblers (52:00), sharing a locker room with the likes of Nadal and Djokovic one minute before playing on run-down courts the next (42:00), at just 25 Sam is in the perfect position to discuss the financial burden of being within touching distance of the top of the world rankings and the determination that it takes to get there (45:00). From his rock bottom moment in Belarus (1:03:00) to the one thing about his playing that he would love to change (1:01:00), this episode is a true tale of perseverance and self-belief.

Declan Murphy: Episode 188
Sunday Apr 23, 2017
Sunday Apr 23, 2017
Declan Murphy says that standing at the bottom of your mountain will not make it any smaller, you have to change something in yourself in order to climb it. This week’s episode brings one of the most harrowing and life-affirming stories of the podcast to date with a top jockey who lived to race again after a catastrophic injury which saw the Racing Post publishing his obituary before his miraculous recovery. Declan tells the tale of the shattering moment of mistrust on the part of his horse which very nearly killed him (23:00), how he once won the Cheltenham Gold Cup solely on adrenaline which delayed the onset of a serious concussion (19:00) and the period of utter confusion for the 28 year old jockey having awoken from a coma believing he was a 12 year old boy (34:00).
From explaining why he believes that it is imperative for us to be prepared to lose everything just to gain that one something (41:00) to how a moment of acknowledging someone’s pity for you can render you useless (48:00), and describing the poetic nature of the trust between the horse and jockey (11:00), this is by far one of the most outstanding conversations of the series.

Sunday Apr 16, 2017
Vincent Hogan is one of Ireland’s most respected sports journalists. This week he joined Jarlath in his home for a candid conversation about the world of sports writing and a career built on great writing and building close relationships with some of Ireland’s most prominent sportsmen. As the man behind the critically acclaimed Paul McGrath autobiography, Vincent explains how he won the trust of McGrath (17:00) and why Henry Shefflin’s level of reflection was different (29:00).

From why he still attends Olympic Games with a knot in his stomach (39:00) to questioning whether the battle against doping is really achieving anything (50:00), and the challenges facing journalism in the digital age (1:05:00), this conversation is a fascinating insight into the trials and tribulations of the career of one of Ireland’s elite sports writers.
