Donald McRae’s new book in Sunshine Or In Shadow is an insight into Northern Ireland during the troubles that you won’t find in any history book or archive news footage. It explains how, through sport of boxing, two of the most historically fraught communities somehow agreed an unwritten peace deal long before the Good Friday Agreement. In a wide ranging discussion Jarlath and Don unravel this incredible collection of tales, the central character, coach Gerry Storey and the challenges Don himself faced in creating the piece. Jarlath quizzes Don on how Storey was able to create a gym where all the boxers attending were given free passes by paramilitary forces on both Republican and Loyalist sides.
Don goes into detail on some of the most moving aspects of the book and how invested he became in the story on a personal level. Barry McGuigan’s world title winning fight offers the climax to the book but Don explains to Jarlath how Barry came close to quitting the game after one horrendous incident. Billy Hedderman is a former Irish special forces army officer who left home for Australia in 2014. Concussion was for a long time considered "just part of the game" of American Football. Then a string of tragic cases and the Will Smith movie “Concussion" changed the thinking of the community. Roger Wilson the former Ireland, Ulster and Barbarians player explains to Jarlath how the change is actually slower than you’d think. After his career ended Wilson set up a company aiming to address the root cause of concussions for players - poor tackling technique. Based in the football hotbed of Texas, Roger’s Tackle Smart company works with high-school, college and pros on adjusting their approach to, thinking towards and technique in tackling.

Dennis Taylor’s journey from factory worker in Tyrone to the pinnacle of snooker was more than bizarre and unusual. He left Ireland without a snooker cue or any thought of turning professional. Jarlath meets Ireland’s first vasectomy doctor to discuss a new short film about an attempt that was made on his life in 1990. Back when the Catholic church dictated Ireland’s laws on sex and reproduction, Dr. Andrew Rynne stood up and challenged the establishment on the issues of contraception, abortion, vasectomies and more.
For his troubles he was hauled in front of the courts, splashed across the tabloids, denounced from the pulpit, disowned by his own father and shot one afternoon in the summer of 1990. Paul Webster’s short film “The Vasectomy Doctor” takes us to that shocking moment and discovers why it happened. Jarlath delves deeper into Dr. Rynne’s story to find out why he left Ireland for Canada only to return due to emigrant ache, how he learned to do vasectomies when nobody would teach them, how the procedure relies on touch more than sight and how taboo the issue sex was back in the late 1970s.
Later in the episode Dr. Rynne looks at the changes that porn has caused in the Irish male and why testosterone deficiency syndrome could explain more than just a loss of libido in older men. Jarlath then speaks to Paul Webster about directing the short film and gets are further insight into the life of one of Ireland’s most influential and courageous medical professionals.
