An Irishman Abroad

Michael Conlan: Episode 168

December 3, 2016

Michael Conlan is, quite simply, the greatest Irish male amateur boxer of all time. This week he joined Jarlath to speak frankly about his journey to the top, his recent move into professionalism and the wake of his devastating Olympics loss. Michael opens up about his innate self-belief and the feeling of invincibility that came with becoming world champion (38:00). Michael also discusses how he switches off his negative thoughts (44:00) while also opening up about why, for a brief moment, he thought he could be the Irish athlete found guilty of doping in Rio (48:00).

Having recently turned professional, Michael is now able to open up about how ‘money is God’ to many of the most corrupt people involved in amateur boxing (22:00) and how the ‘complete stupidity’ of its fight scheduling (20:00) perfectly demonstrates this.
