Jonathan Drennan: Episode 192
Sunday May 21, 2017
Sunday May 21, 2017
As an aspiring journalist growing up in Northern Ireland, Jonathan Drennan could only dream to one day write for a local newspaper. Now living in Sydney, Jonathan writes for the Irish Times and The Guardian, having also been a correspondent for Australia’s Channel 7. To say Jonathan struggled with his mental health is an understatement, this week he outlines his battle with depressive tendencies despite growing up in a positive family environment (4:00) and how it eventually led to him being numb to everything while captaining a rugby team in London aged 26 (9:00).
Jonathan explains his incredible meeting with Freddie Roach, which was helped by the boxing legend’s mother taking a shine to him (26:00) and why his take on the furore surrounding Tyson Fury is not in line with the popular opinion (32:00). With a refreshing honesty, Jonathan also speaks frankly about the process of understanding one’s emotional triggers (50:00) and the true impact of Irish people over-doing it when it comes to self-deprecating humour (51:00).

Declan Murphy: Episode 188
Sunday Apr 23, 2017
Sunday Apr 23, 2017
Declan Murphy says that standing at the bottom of your mountain will not make it any smaller, you have to change something in yourself in order to climb it. This week’s episode brings one of the most harrowing and life-affirming stories of the podcast to date with a top jockey who lived to race again after a catastrophic injury which saw the Racing Post publishing his obituary before his miraculous recovery. Declan tells the tale of the shattering moment of mistrust on the part of his horse which very nearly killed him (23:00), how he once won the Cheltenham Gold Cup solely on adrenaline which delayed the onset of a serious concussion (19:00) and the period of utter confusion for the 28 year old jockey having awoken from a coma believing he was a 12 year old boy (34:00).
From explaining why he believes that it is imperative for us to be prepared to lose everything just to gain that one something (41:00) to how a moment of acknowledging someone’s pity for you can render you useless (48:00), and describing the poetic nature of the trust between the horse and jockey (11:00), this is by far one of the most outstanding conversations of the series.

Sunday Apr 16, 2017
Vincent Hogan is one of Ireland’s most respected sports journalists.
