Sarah Lavin - Taking Your Second Chance - The Big Interview (Part 1)

You can feel the gratitude glowing off Sarah Lavin when you talk to her. Maybe that's because she knows in her heart, better than most athletes, how close the end can be. She watched all her Olympic dreams crumble one day when she rolled her ankle in a freakishly simple turn on an indoor track. Broken hearted after previously piecing herself back together from other injuries, she had to resign herself to the fact the Tokyo games were gone from her grasp. Everything changed with COVID. The sad circumstances that prevented the games from taking place allowed her the time to recover, train, refocus and climb into the top 40 hurdlers in the planet. 

 

This week she spoke to me from her training camp about her first steps in athletics, the temptations of alcohol in Ireland, second chances, Gerard Hartman, patience, presence and the mad thoughts that go through her head on the start line.

As the States wind down for a couple of days of rest, gratitude and food appreciation, Marion reflects on the shift towards optimism in the nation on certain issues and the resignation to reality on others. With more mass shootings than days in the year 2022, how close is a ban on automatic weapons? One person who might not have the most restful Thanksgiving is Kevin McCarthy. Marion reflects on his grandstanding ways and how dumb he looks when spewing spiteful words about the undeniable imprint of Nancy Pelosi. Stupidity was the order of the day this week when the scam artist formerly known as President Trump attempted the Homer Simpson excuse for stealing confidential documents from the White House. Jarlath and Marion take a moment on this holiday to wonder if his supposedly vast support base might be beginning to fizzle now that season two of this cabaret act is looking a little predictable. Finally Marion digs into Taylor Swift's Ticketmaster debacle. Why has it taken this long for lawmaker to recognise a monopoly this obvious? Will they do anything about it or will they be bought off again by seats up front at Harry Styles.

Irishman Running Abroad - Injuries Episode With Special Guest Vinny Mulvey

Pain comes in the same packet as running. Sonia O'Sullivan sends Jarlath to one of the top physical therapists in Ireland to figure out why he has been injured for the last four weeks. Vinny Mulvey talks to Jarlath about his understanding of the pain game with running, when to stop and the biggest risks of overloading the body. Vinny, an elite athlete in his own time, tries to puzzle out what Jarlath did wrong and empathises with him over the mental challenges of being hurt through running. Later in the show we get a trip around the running parishes as Sonia admires some of the club members who completed the New York City marathon over the weekend.
