Can A Book Pave A New Path To Peace? - Colum McCann

Can A Book Pave A New Path To Peace? - Colum McCann

November 14, 2020

Critically acclaimed Irish author Colum McCann gives us a rare insight into his latest novel and the power of storytelling. When you listen to this powerful conversation, you will not be surprised to hear that Colum has won the Rooney Prize, the Novel of the Year Award, the National Book Award and International Dublin Literary Award.

His Man Booker Prize longlisted book Apeirogon has lead critics to ask if a book can bring about peace in Israel. Jarlath digs deep into the experience that lead Colum to writing this game changing work. We how his time spent working as a wilderness educator for young offenders Texas changed his path and his recollection of living in New York during 9/11. As Professor of Creative Writing in the Master of Fine Arts program at Hunter College, New York his views on the art of teaching are truly inspiring for anyone trying to spark the interest of young students.
In its essence, this is a conversation about the power of listening and telling one's story and it could not have come at a better time.

The legal challenges are failing one by one but the news madia are barely covering this news. Why is Trump doing this? Is it because he knows prison time could be on the way or is it to harvest the money he now desperately needs. Reality is dawning and his allies are falling by the wayside. Marion tells us what we are not hearing and few insider titbits she has stumbled across this week. We definitely toasted too early but why are these states taking so long to tally their votes?

If you have a question for Marion please send it through to irishmanabroadpodcast@gmail.com and Jarlath will do his best to include it in the next episode.

November 6, 2020
What a difference a couple of days can make? Last time Jarlath spoke to Marion they scratched their heads and wondered how they had gotten it so wrong. A new reality dawned as the postal votes were counted and 45 went “full Mugabe” in a press conference most outlets cut short. Joe Biden stands on the very brink of being name President elect but can Donald Trump stop him. Marion looks at the possibilities, how it all changed and what could happen from here. Jarlath puts as many of your questions to her as possible. It’s a bumper episode to mark the end of a crazy week.

What? How? Why? And where does this thing go from here? A bleary eyed and head melted Marion McKeone sits down with Jarlath at 5am to consider how this bizarre election played out and whether the President’s attempt to stop the counting will work. Where did it all go wrong for Mr. Biden? Why did anyone believe the polls? Will anyone ever believe them again? Jarlath puts your questions to the US political analyst and considers what a Biden Presidency would look like if he somehow manages to squeak past the line.

An Irishman In America (Judgement Day: Marion McKeone’s Final Thoughts From The Campaign Trail - Special Bonus Episode): Trailer

November 2, 2020
In our final pre-election chat with the always brilliant Marion McKeone we look at the three possible outcomes. Jarlath presents Marion with a fourth and they discuss its likelihood. Confidence has been replaced with anxiety as the states batten down the hatches but how likely is violence on the streets?

Breaking down the key states and answering the key questions, Marion leads us to the end of this story and admits to being more a little lost on the issue of predicting an outcome. Tomorrow could be merely the beginning of the next chapter of the battle to take the White House.

Law, Order & The Crucial Swing State Of Wisconsin - Making A Murderer Attorney Jerry Buting

Law, Order & The Crucial Swing State Of Wisconsin - Making A Murderer Attorney Jerry Buting

October 31, 2020

Jerry Buting has worked for more than 35 years as a criminal lawyer working exclusively on the defence of serious criminal cases. In 2016, his appearance in the Netflix hit series Making a Murderer, turned him into a household name as he acted in the defence of Steven Avery alongside his colleague Dean Strang.

This is Jerry's third conversation with Jarlath on the Irishman Abroad Podcast Network and it certainly does not disappoint. Jerry speaks about how COVID 19 is taking a tighter grip on the state of Wisconsin in which he lives, before delving into a review of what Trump has/hasn't done for the criminal justice system in America and he also gives an honest account of the pressures of working in an overloaded system.

From the importance of educating the public in how politicians use the fear of crime to get elected to a bombshell revelation surrounding Steven Avery, Brendan Dassey and the Making a Murder series, why crime labs are so reluctant to carry out blind testing and much more, this is a truly fascinating conversation on what what will be a vital week in American history.
