Dennis Taylor’s journey from factory worker in Tyrone to the pinnacle of snooker was more than bizarre and unusual. He left Ireland without a snooker cue or any thought of turning professional. At that time there was barely a professional version of the game. He explains to Jarlath how he realised that he had a talent by chance in a local snooker club in the north of England (6:00). Within 5 years he was listed as one of the top ten players in the world and gunning for the world title.
Dennis opens up about the unseen grind of the game (20:00), his friendship with the late Alex Higgins (55:00), the effects of being an overnight celebrity (24:00), Ronnie O’Sullivan (35:00) and much much more. Whether you’re a snooker fan or not, this is an episode about a unique life you can’t fail to enjoy with one of the best characters ever to play the game.

John Duddy and Tim Wheeler (Live from NYC): Episode 269
Sunday Nov 11, 2018
Sunday Nov 11, 2018
This week Jarlath is joined live in front of a packed Stella and Fly venue in the heart of New York City by boxer-turned-actor John Duddy and Ash frontman and award-winning songwriter Tim Wheeler for an hour of chat.
Tim explains how it feels to have thousands of audience members in the palm of your hand (22:00), how he once lost a tooth on stage (15:00) and how little he trusts himself due to his addictive personality (11:00).
John tells the story of his fortuitous move into acting (50:00), the fight that he was worried most about winning (41:00) and New York’s appeal to immigrants (17:00).
From the seldom-spoken about video involving Tim, a dominatrix and some talcum powder (8:00) to the industry norm of giving cocaine to journalists (36:00), why John was never afraid to enter the ring (40:00) and Ash’s strange Co. Louth online troller (49:00), this is one of the true highlights of Irishman Abroad’s live episodes in the series to date.
